Children of Nature Find Your Wonderland
June 16 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pmfree
A debut solo exhibit by visual artist Kristin Maija Peterson, to be hosted by the Owatonna Arts Center explores the question of beauty in the natural world, the one we view as wild and chaotic and feel the need to control. What is considered beautiful and what is not? How does that clash with our own aesthetics and understanding of our everyday natural surroundings?
Through her work, the artist asks the viewer to remember your inner eight-year-old self when everything you saw outside at your feet was a discovery, everything miraculous. There were no judgments, just awe, a feeling of belonging and connection.
“Our disconnect from nature is killing us. One evidence of this is the rise of mental illness, particularly in young people. When we are out in nature, our bodies remember and respond by lowing blood pressure and stress levels, increasing our ability to focus and aid in our bodies’ healing process. Let nature be a part of who we are, part of the natural world. If we take care of the natural world, the natural world will take care of us.” — Kristin Maija Peterson
Peterson’s works on paper include large-scale drawings and watercolors, stories, and quotes reflecting on these thoughts as it relates to ourselves, our well-being, climate change, and our interconnected relationship to all living things.
Artist’s Opening Reception will be held Sunday, June 5 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. Meet the artist during the opening. Peterson will give an Artist’s Talk at 2:30 pm followed by a raffle of native plants for garden planting as well as a couple of small framed prints of her work. Refreshments will be served. Artwork is available for sale.
