Welcome to Theatre Elision’s sixth year presenting Ghost Quartet, a Twin Cities spooky tradition! Ghost Quartet is a song cycle about love, death and whiskey from Dave Malloy, the Tony-nominated creator of the Broadway hit “Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812.” A camera breaks and four friends drink in an interwoven tale spanning seven centuries, with a murderous sister, a treehouse astronomer, a bear, a subway, and the ghost of Thelonious Monk. The story draws from several fairy tales and “ghost stories”, including Snow White and Rose Red, Edgar Allen Poe’s Fall of the House of Usher, and One Thousand and One Nights (commonly known as Arabian Nights). There may also be some Legend of Zelda references you might recognize. Cast members present the story and music as a “concept album” and accompany themselves on a wide variety of instruments, including keyboard, ukulele, guitar, mandolin, banjo, autoharp, dulcimer and more percussion instruments than you can count.

BOLD-choice Theatre is taking their new country western musical “Sundown on the Japser Country Jewel” on the road!
Jasper County once had the most illustrious Honky Tonk venue in all the country – but years of wear and changing times have put “The Jewel” on the verge of ruin. Through original songs and music, storytelling, and reflection, BOLD-choice tells the fictional story of the once-famed Country Western Theatre.

“Original spoken dialogue by founder, director and star Anne Wieben gets interspersed with the sung German libretto, creating an accessible entry point….but Opera on the Lake’s secret is its marvelous singers.”

Minimal staging, Maximal singing and a boatload of fun!
—Robb Hubbard, Pioneer Press, July 25, 2019

“As Minnesota’s foremost authority in performing Viennese operetta – and more than a decade of experience performing this repertoire in Vienna – Anne Wieben brings a wealth of insight into The Merry Widow‘s moods, rhythms, and humor, suffusing the production with a tug that pulls you in. Throw in the gorgeous score and catchy songs, and it’s The Merry Widow better than you’ve ever imagined it before.”
—Amy Donahue, Twin Cities Arts Reader, July 24, 2022

“The set was simple with sparkly elements, as well as the costumes. Anne added dialogue to this production, and this helped audience members follow the storyline. She also included many Minnesota references that audiences always enjoy. Anne sticks to the storyline but adds modern elements to it that work.”
—Jared Fessler, Broadway World, July 29, 2023

Sea Cabinet is a song cycle of linked songs about memory, obsession, love and the sea. A woman walks the beach alone, obsessively collecting every discarded and washed-up object she finds. She takes them home to catalogue each one with the care and rigor of a scientist. Each item sings with the memory of a secret sea-set story. Written and originally performed in England, our 2019 production was the U.S. premiere of the work. We are thrilled to return to this much-loved work!

This 75-minute song cycle is performed in one-act with no intermission.
