How Poetry Call Us Toward Our Deeper Selves

May 11, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

$10

Margaret Hasse will read from and discuss themes in her latest volume of poetry, Summoned. The title was inspired by a handmade sign at the Floyd memorial: “All mothers were summoned when George Floyd called out for his.” A suite poems within the book, each called “Another Day of Being White,” explores personal dimensions of white privilege. The poet, as a white mother, is keenly aware her black sons do not share these benefits. Although the subject matter can be somber, there’s also wit, humor, and lyricism to be found in Summoned, Ideally, participants will have read the book; however, copies of a few of the poems will be available to all who sign up. The presentation invites readers to consider their own deep concerns and hopes.

“Summoned,” a book of poetry by Margaret Hasse

Margaret Hasse is the author of seven collections of poems. She co-edited Rocked by the Waters: poems of motherhood. During the first year of the pandemic, she collaborated with a visual artist on Shelter, a book of paintings and poems about refuge. Her recent collection of poems, Summoned, explores compelling personal and social questions such as: How to mourn and celebrate the body as we age? What does it feel like to have white privilege? Where can we find meaning and pleasure in small ephemeral things? Margaret leads workshops and presents her poems to encourage others to find delight and meaning in reading, writing, performing, or discussing poetry.
