The Twin Cities most attended and longest-running annual Brazilian festival heads to the Midtown Global Market for its annual Family Matinee on Saturday, February 18 from 12 – 2 p.m.
The event will be hosted by guitarist and vocalist Robert Everest and his nine-piece group Beira Mar Brasil. More than 30 performers and artists – including percussionists, singers, musicians, samba dancers, and artisans – will transform the Midtown Global Market into an authentically festive Brazilian cultural experience!
Everest, who also serves as Executive Director of Brazilfest MN, has been joyfully exploring Brazilian music and culture for more than 30 years. He delivers authentic Brazilian carnival flavor through various musical genres from around the country – Samba, Axé, Frevo, Baião, and other dance-inducing styles.
Brazilfest Family Matinee will also include a performance from professional samba dancer/instructor Ginga da Bahia, along with samba dancers Alessandra Silva and Clarissa Flores from Dancando em Comunidade (Dancing in the Community), a Afro-Brazilian martial arts demonstration, and Brazilian dance lessons. Authentic carnaval masks created by master Brazilian artisan Goretti Aamot will be for sale, while guests will be invited to make their own as well.
Bar Arepa will be offering a special Carnaval menu, including:
• Pan de queso – Brazilian baked bread, cheese.
• Shrimp ceviche – Pineapple, serranos, sweet peppers, onions, leche de tigre
• Parrillada – Beef, chicken, chorizo, blood sausage, onions, peppers
• Deep fried Snapper – 10oz Red Snapper Fillet with 2 sides of your preference
• Passion fruit mousse – Passion fruit, maria cookies
• Cocada – Coconut cream, condensed milk, toasted coconut
The annual Carnaval Brasileiro celebrated throughout Brazil, lasts nearly a week, and has roots dating back to the 1700s. Like Mardi Gras, Carnaval is an all-out party with music, masks, dancing, and drinks – a final blowout before Lenten traditions begin for the Easter season.
